More on ButterfieldSeptember 9, 2010The letter to the editor on Aug. 13 concerning Rep. G.K. Butterfield’s taking of money from Charlie Rangel was spot on. A few other things were left out that need to be stated. Rep. Butterfield has a record of doing less for the people of his district than any other N.C. congressman in Washington. So what exactly do we pay him for? Like Kay Hagan and Alice Underhill, you see very little of him until they need your vote and money. It is the peas in a pod thing I figure. G.K. Butterfield also revealed in an interview that he does not return any unspent travel funds advanced to him. He states that it is usually only 50, 80 or maybe 100 dollars so he keeps it even though the rules state it must be returned with accompanying receipts. Hmm, not that much you think? There are 435 members of the House; multiply it out at $100 per member. When questioned about the health care bill in a recent town hall (a rare occurrence), he finally admitted he had not read the bill. I guess he follows the Democratic principle of making it up as he goes along. Mr. Butterfield is one of Nancy Pelosi’s closest allies and considered one of her go-to guys to muster support. She never questions whether he will vote along with her. He’s just sent to garner support from others who at least skim the bills and think before voting. G.K. Butterfield is so close to Pelosi that if she gets poison ivy he itches. We need a congressman who will scratch when we itch, not a California itch that scratches at our pocketbooks and freedoms. To paraphrase Ms. Pelosi, “We have to vote for a new congressman to see what real representation is.” G.K. Butterfield and Alice Underhill (sort of rhymes, don’t it?), charter members of photo-op-mania, need to be replaced by Ashley Woolard and Norman Sanderson, respectively. At least they are visible and actually known by “we the people” of Craven County. It just instills confidence when your representatives see you in person with their hand outstretched to shake yours, not just seen in pictures or with their palm facing up for money. Ouch, that hurt and itches. Must be one of Butterfield’s escaped and unfunded bed bugs. Don Fleming |
